Chapter 1: The Mask Comes Off

14 hours after our wedding, my husband threw a filthy, grease-soaked rag in my face in front of his 22 relatives.
"Get on your knees and clean it.
Learn the rules," he sneered.
His mother smiled proudly.
They thought they broke me on day one.
I didn't cry.
I smiled.
"I need to wash my face," I whispered.
I went upstairs, packed my passport, $45,000, and a deadly secret.
When he tried to trap me in the bedroom, he didn't know I was the one locking him in...
It is a strange and terrifying thing to watch the person you love peel off their human mask.
It doesn't happen with a dramatic flourish.
For me, it happened exactly fourteen hours after I had promised him my forever, amidst the clinking glasses of a post-wedding brunch.
As I stepped past my mother-in-law, Brenda, she pivoted and "accidentally" knocked a massive crystal bowl of oily, roasted vegetable drippings straight onto my pristine white heels.
"Oh, look what you made me do, Chloe," she sighed loudly.
The room of thirty relatives fell completely silent.
Before I could even process the absurdity, Derek—my new husband—grabbed a filthy, grease-soaked dish towel from the buffet and threw it directly into my face.
The physical impact wasn't painful, but the humiliation was absolute.
A nauseating mixture of old dishwater and rancid oil trickled down my skin, stinging my eyes.
"Get on your knees and clean it up," Derek announced casually, his voice dripping with cold dominion.
"From now on, this is your job.
Don't think you're going to be a freeloader in my house."
I stood frozen.
*This is a sick joke*, my brain scrambled to rationalize the sudden cruelty.
But as I peeled the vile rag from my face, my eyes met his.
There was no teasing glint.
Beside him, Brenda watched with a smug, victorious smile.
Seeing that I wasn't weeping or dropping to the floor, Derek moved closer, his jaw tightening.
"I'm talking to you, Chloe.
Are you deaf?
Get on the floor."
Slowly, deliberately, I lowered the towel.
I didn't scream.
I didn't cry.
Instead, an eerie, icy calm washed over me.
I smiled—a textbook, customer-service smile, showing exactly eight teeth.
"I need to go upstairs and wash my face first," I whispered, my voice shockingly steady.
I turned and walked out of the dining room, feeling the burn of thirty stares on my back.
I marched up the sweeping staircase to our designated "marital suite." I dropped to my knees, unzipped the hidden lining of my suitcase, and retrieved the $45,000 cashier's check my parents had given me as a safety net.
I shoved my passport and the ornate marriage certificate we had signed just the day before into my backpack.
Then I grabbed my phone from my clutch, discovering a notification on the screen that made my bl00d run completely cold.
A profound, intoxicating lightness overtook me.
With my backpack on my shoulders, I turned toward the door, ready to walk out on this fourteen-hour marriage.
But just as I reached for the brass handle, the heavy oak door slammed shut right in my face.
*Click.*
The sound of the deadbolt locking from the outside echoed in the quiet room.
Derek's footsteps faded down the hallway.
He had locked me in to teach me a lesson.
He thought I was trapped.
He was d3ad wrong...

What was on that phone notification — and how did Chloe get out?
