Then I pulled out my phone and read the notification again.
It was a wire transfer confirmation.
$312,000.
Moved out of our joint account — the one Derek had insisted I sign onto the morning of the wedding — and into an account I had never seen before.
He hadn't just humiliated me in front of his family.
He had been planning this for months.
My hands were steady.
My mind was clear.
I opened the bathroom window, stepped onto the narrow ledge, and climbed down to the side garden the way I had quietly mapped out two days earlier.
Just in case.
I had hoped I wouldn't need it.
I was almost at the gate when I heard Brenda's voice cut across the garden.
"She's running.

Footsteps.
Shouting.
The back door crashing open.
And then a voice I didn't recognize — calm, low, and close behind me.
"Chloe.
Stop.
I'm not with them."
I spun around.
A woman I had never seen at the wedding stood just inside the garden wall.
She was holding something in her hand.
A photograph.
Of Derek.
And a woman.
And a child I had never known existed.
"You need to hear what I know," she said.
"Before you go to the police.
Because what he did to you — it's happened before."
