As the officers led Evelyn toward the door, she turned back one last time.
"You'll regret this, Ryan.
Everything I did was to save that boy from her."
Ryan didn't answer.
He was already beside Maya, holding her hand while the EMT pressed a cold pack against her face.
Oliver had stopped struggling.
The oxygen mask had calmed his breathing.
But he hadn't let go of Maya's sleeve.
Not once.
Ryan leaned down and kissed his son's forehead.
Then he looked at Maya.
"How long has she been doing this?"
Maya closed her eyes.
"Since the day we brought Oliver home."
Ryan went still.
Then one of the officers called from across the room.
"Mr.
Whitmore.
You need to see this."
He crossed to where the officer was standing — beside the unlocked folder, now open to a page Ryan hadn't noticed before.
It wasn't a custody form.
It was a private medical report.
With Oliver's name at the top.
And a doctor's signature Ryan didn't recognize.
He looked up.
"Who is Dr.
Harlan Briggs?"
Maya's face went white.
"She told me he was Oliver's new specialist," she whispered.
"She made the appointment herself.
I never met him."
Ryan turned the page.
The report listed Oliver's condition as severe and deteriorating — directly contradicting every note from their actual pediatrician.
Someone had been building a false medical history for his son.
And it had been going on for months.
