Chapter 7: What the Camera Saw

The forensic technician's name was Carla Webb.

She arrived at the house at noon, while Ryan was still at the hospital with Maya and Oliver.

A neighbor Ryan trusted let her in.

By two in the afternoon, Carla called.

"Your instinct was right," she said.

"The computer was accessed.

Twice.

Once approximately nine weeks ago and once six weeks ago.

Both times, the session lasted under twenty minutes."

"What did they look at?"

"Financial records.

Specifically, your joint account statements, your insurance policy documents, and a folder labeled 'Oliver — Medical.' They didn't download files.

They photographed the screen."

Ryan was standing in the hospital corridor.

He pressed his back against the wall.

"The medical folder.

What was in it?"

"Based on the file names still on the drive — Oliver's diagnosis history, his treatment records, his prescription logs, and correspondence with his pediatrician."

Everything Evelyn would have needed to build a false picture of Oliver's care.

Every document she could have distorted, misrepresented, or used to make Maya look negligent.

"Can you document all of this for a legal filing?"

"That's what I do," Carla said.

"I'll have a full report to your attorney by tomorrow morning."

Ryan thanked her and ended the call.

He stood in the corridor for a moment.

Then he walked back into Oliver's room.

Oliver was sitting up in bed with a small plastic dinosaur in each hand, making them walk across the blanket.

Maya was beside him, watching.

She looked up when Ryan came in.

He sat on the edge of the bed.

Oliver immediately held up a green dinosaur.

"This one's the fast one," Oliver said.

"Is he?" Ryan took the dinosaur and walked it across the blanket.

"What's his name?"

"Gerald."

Ryan went very still.

Maya pressed her lips together.

"He named it after he heard you on the phone this morning," she said quietly.

Ryan looked at his son.

Three years old.

Sick enough last night to need oxygen.

Now walking a plastic dinosaur named Gerald across a hospital blanket.

"That's a good name," Ryan said.

Oliver nodded seriously and took the dinosaur back.

Ryan looked at Maya.

"Carla confirmed it.

They accessed the computer twice.

They photographed Oliver's medical records."

Maya closed her eyes.

"She built the whole case from our own files," Ryan said.

"Everything she needed, she took from our house."

"I know." Maya opened her eyes.

"I found the folder on her tablet once, about four months ago.

She left it open when she went to the bathroom.

I only saw it for a second before I heard her coming back." She paused.

"I didn't know what to do.

I didn't think you'd believe me."

"Maya—"

"I'm not saying that to hurt you.

I'm saying it because it's true." Her voice was steady.

"I had to find another way."

Ryan nodded.

He didn't argue.

"Rourke filed the motion this morning," he said.

"The court should receive it today.

He thinks the petition gets suspended within forty-eight hours."

"And if it doesn't?"

"Then we go to the hearing with the camera footage, the forensic report, the fake doctor's name, and six weeks of documentation your lawyer has been building." Ryan looked at her.

"We have more than she does."

Maya was quiet for a moment.

"She called me this morning," she said.

Ryan looked up sharply.

"When?"

"While you were with Rourke.

She called my cell." Maya reached for her phone and held it out.

"I recorded it."

Ryan took the phone.

He pressed play.

Evelyn's voice came through the speaker, low and controlled, the tone she used when she wanted to sound reasonable.

*"Maya.

I know last night was frightening.

I want you to know I don't blame you for reacting the way you did.

But I need you to understand — what I did, I did for Oliver.

Ryan is too close to see it.

You know that.

You've always known he can't see me clearly."*

A pause.

Then:

*"I'm asking you to think about what a court case will do to that little boy.

Think about what it will do to Ryan.

Drop this now, and I will drop the petition.

We can handle this privately.

As a family."*

Maya's recorded voice came next, calm and quiet.

*"I'm going to need you to stop calling me."*

Then the line went de@d.

Ryan set the phone down on the blanket.

Oliver looked at it, then went back to his dinosaurs.

"She was offering a deal," Ryan said.

"She was threatening me and calling it a deal." Maya took the phone back.

"I sent the recording to Rourke an hour ago."

Ryan looked at his wife.

She had recorded the call.

She had sent it to the lawyer.

She had done all of it while sitting in a hospital chair next to their sick son, without saying a word about it until now.

"How long have you been this prepared?" he asked.

Maya looked at him for a moment.

"Since the day we brought Oliver home," she said.

May you like

It was the same answer she had given him in the nursery the night before.

This time, he understood exactly what it meant.
