Chapter 1: The Night They Thought They'd Won

The buzzing woke me before the pain did.
I opened my eyes to Eleanor pinning my head against the pillow while electric clippers carved a bare stripe through my hair.
"Tomorrow you resign and learn how to be a proper wife."
I screamed and pushed her away.
Half my hair slid across the sheets.
Daniel appeared in the doorway.
"Your mother att@cked me while I was sleeping!"
He took the clippers from Eleanor, set them down, and looked at the jagged bald strip above my ear.
Then he shrugged.
"It's hair.
It will grow back tomorrow."
Something inside me went completely still.
I picked up the clippers.
Eleanor smiled.
Daniel thought I had surrendered.
Instead, I looked into the mirror and shaved away every remaining strand myself.
When I turned back, neither of them was smiling.
"You're right," I said.
"Tomorrow, everything changes."
Then my phone lit up beside the bed.
A corporate alert.
Someone had already submitted my resignation.
With my signature.
