Chapter 2: The Name She Wasn't Supposed to See

My hands were shaking as I stared at the screen.

Submitted at 11:47 PM.

While Eleanor had me pinned to that pillow.

"You did this," I said.

My voice came out flat.

Quiet.

Worse than screaming.

Daniel didn't deny it.

He crossed his arms.

"You were never going to do it yourself.

Someone had to."

"That's my job.

My career.

You had no right—"

"I have every right.

I'm your husband."

Eleanor stepped forward, and for the first time I saw it — satisfaction.

Not anger.

Not frustration.

Pure, planned satisfaction.

This wasn't a reaction.

This was a schedule.

"How long?" I asked.

"How long have you two been planning this?"

Neither of them answered.

I opened my email.

The resignation had been sent from my own laptop.

From inside this house.

The timestamp was three days ago.

Three days ago I had been at work.

Daniel had been home alone.

I scrolled down and felt the room tilt.

The email had been sent to HR — and copied to one other address.

A name I didn't recognize.

But Eleanor did.

Because when I read it aloud, she looked away for the first time all night.

What is that name — and what does Eleanor know?

The full truth is darker than anything Daniel admitted.
