Chapter 1: The Ring on the Counter

MY HUSBAND SL\*PPED ME IN FRONT OF HIS MISTRESS—BUT TEN SECONDS LATER, HE WAS THE ONE ON HIS KNEES, BEGGING ME NOT TO WALK AWAY.
I stepped into the luxury jewelry store Nathan proudly called "his empire."
He was standing beside a glowing diamond display case.
And next to him was Celeste.
The woman I had suspected for months.
She wore a champagne silk dress, arms crossed, staring at me as if I were the intruder.
Nathan spun around.
"What are you doing here?"
His voice was so cold that the entire store seemed to go silent.
"Are you following me?"
I didn't even have time to answer.
SL\*P.
His hand struck my face.
I stumbled.
Then he h\*t me again.
This time, I fell onto the cold marble floor.
Not one employee said a word.
Not one customer stepped forward.
And Celeste?
She just stood there…
smiling.
That smile told me everything.
She thought she had won.
Nathan did too.
He looked down at me like a man who believed he still controlled everything.
What he didn't know was that I had been preparing for this moment for an entire week.
Slowly, I stood up.
No tears.
No screaming.
No begging.
I simply looked down at the wedding ring on my hand.
The same ring Nathan had once slipped onto my finger while promising we would build a future together.
I took it off.
Then placed it on the glass counter between us.
"I came to return this."
Celeste's smile widened.
Nathan almost smirked.
They thought I was surrendering.
Then I looked straight into my husband's eyes.
"My lawyer will be claiming half your shares tomorrow."
Nathan's smile disappeared.
His face went white.
Seconds earlier, he had been standing over me like I had nothing.
Now he stepped toward me.
"Emma…
wait."
I turned away.
Behind me, I heard his voice crack.
"You can't do this."
When I looked back…
Nathan was on his knees.
But he still didn't understand why I had really come to that store.
I wasn't there just to return my ring.
I came to see what he would do when he believed I was completely powerless.
And he did exactly what I needed.
He h\*t me.
On camera.
In front of witnesses.
Inside the very store containing records that could prove he had been lying to me for years.
Because one week earlier, I had found a document bearing my signature.
There was only one problem.
I had never signed it.
That document transferred control of millions of dollars in shares from me to Nathan.
And Celeste wasn't simply my husband's mistress.
She had once worked for my mother.
She knew about my family's trust.
She knew exactly what would happen on my twenty-ninth birthday.
And she knew why Nathan absolutely had to remove me from the company before Friday.
I thought I had uncovered an affair.
I was wrong.
They didn't just want to destroy my marriage.
They wanted something my family had spent nearly thirty years protecting.
But later that night, I discovered something even more disturbing.
The man I had been told was g\*ne for years…
might still be alive.
And if that was true…
Nathan might not be the most dangerous person in this story.

Nathan h\*t Emma in front of everyone — and had no idea what she had already set in motion.
What happens when her lawyer makes that call on Friday?
