Chapter 2: The Photograph at the Door

I drove home with one hand on the wheel and the other pressed against my cheek.

It didn't hurt anymore.

That scared me more than the pain would have.

When I walked through the front door, my phone was already ringing.

It was my lawyer, Daniel.

"Emma.

The store's security footage has been secured.

All of it."

I exhaled slowly.

"And the document?"

A pause.

"That's why I'm calling.

Our forensics contact finished the analysis an hour ago."

He stopped.

"Daniel.

Tell me."

"The signature isn't just forged, Emma.

It was forged using a scan of your actual handwriting.

Someone who had access to your personal files.

Someone close."

I sat down on the kitchen floor.

Not because I was weak.

Because I suddenly understood what that meant.

Only three people had ever had access to those files.

Nathan.

My former assistant.

And my mother.

I was still sitting there when a knock came at the door.

I opened it.

A woman I had never seen before stood on the step.

Older.

Nervous.

Holding a manila envelope with both hands.

"Are you Emma?"

"Yes."

She glanced over her shoulder before she spoke.

"Celeste sent me.

But not to help Nathan."

She pushed the envelope toward me.

"She said you need to see what's inside before Friday.

Before they move the trust."

I took it.

My hands were steady.

But when I looked inside…

I saw a photograph.

A man I recognized.

A man I was told had d\*ed in a car accident eleven years ago.

Standing outside my mother's house.

Last week.

Emma thought she knew who her enemies were — but this photograph just changed everything.

The full truth is darker and closer than she ever imagined.
