CHAPTER 1: The Scissors and the Lie

My husband stepped through the door just as his new wife finished cutting off our six-year-old daughter's hair.

Her expression shifted instantly.

She hid the scissors behind her back, pointed at my nine-year-old son, and said:

"The children were playing.

Ben cut his sister's hair."

But Ben screamed five words that stopped his father cold:

"She's lying!

She did it!"

Clarissa Kingsley had been married to Mason for less than a year.

From the outside, she appeared devoted to his two children.

She bought them expensive gifts, posed beside them in family photographs, and repeatedly told everyone that she loved Ava and Ben as if they were her own.

But whenever Mason left the house, Clarissa changed.

She criticized the children's clothes.

She removed photographs of their late mother from the hallway and punished them whenever they mentioned her name.

Six-year-old Ava became her favorite target.

That evening, the Kingsley family was preparing for a charity gala.

Ava wore a pale-yellow dress and two white ribbons in her long blonde hair.

Her late mother had chosen those ribbons shortly before she passed.

Clarissa ordered Ava to remove them.

Ava shook her head.

"Mommy gave them to me."

Clarissa's face hardened.

She led Ava into the entrance hallway, grabbed one of her ponytails, and took a large pair of silver scissors from a nearby table.

Ben heard his sister crying and rushed downstairs.

He arrived just as the scissors closed through Ava's hair.

The severed ponytail dropped onto the marble floor.

Ava screamed.

Ben stepped between them, but Clarissa raised the scissors and warned him not to interfere.

Then the mansion's front doors opened.

Mason had come home early.

The moment Clarissa saw her husband, the cruelty vanished from her face.

She hid the scissors behind her back and replaced her anger with artificial concern.

"The children were playing," she said.

"Ben cut his sister's hair."

Ben stared at her in disbelief.

"She's lying!

She did it!"

Clarissa accused him of becoming jealous and violent toward his younger sister.

She claimed she had arrived too late to stop him.

For one terrible second, Mason looked at his son.

Then he noticed the large wall mirror behind Clarissa.

The reflection revealed the silver scissors still hidden in her hand.

Ava's severed ponytail lay beside Clarissa's shoe.

Mason crossed the hallway and sl*pped Clarissa once across the face.

The scissors fell from her hand and slid across the marble.

But Ben had more than his own word to prove what happened.

Before rushing downstairs, he had activated the camera on his tablet.

The recording captured Clarissa threatening Ava, cutting her hair, and saying something neither child fully understood:

"Once your father believes Ben is dangerous, both of you will be gone."

Mason replayed those words three times.

Then he searched Clarissa's private desk.

Inside, he found applications for a boarding school, custody evaluations describing Ben as violent, and legal papers giving Clarissa control of the children's inheritance if they were removed from the home.

Cutting Ava's hair had not been an impulsive act.

Clarissa had planned to blame Ben, turn Mason against his son, and use the incident to remove both children.

But one person had helped her prepare every document.

When Mason discovered the name printed beneath Clarissa's signature, he realized the conspiracy had begun before their wedding.
