Chapter 2: She Wasn't Supposed to Wait

Part 2 👇

Mason's hands were shaking as he held the documents.

The name beneath Clarissa's signature was not a lawyer's.

It was not an accountant's.

It was his brother's.

Daniel had been Mason's closest friend since childhood.

He had stood beside him at the funeral when the children's mother passed.

He had introduced Mason to Clarissa fourteen months later.

Mason walked back into the hallway.

Clarissa was still on the floor, her composure finally broken.

"How long?" Mason said quietly.

She said nothing.

"How long has Daniel been involved in this?"

Clarissa looked up.

For a moment, something crossed her face — not guilt, but calculation.

"You don't understand what you're looking at," she said.

"I understand perfectly."

He pulled out his phone and called Daniel.

It rang twice.

Then Daniel picked up.

"Mason.

I was just about to call you—"

"Were you." It wasn't a question.

A long silence followed.

Then Daniel said four words that made Mason's bl00d go cold:

"She wasn't supposed to wait."

The call ended.

Mason stood completely still in the hallway where his daughter's hair still lay on the marble floor.

Ava was upstairs.

Ben was beside her.

And Mason finally understood that tonight was not the beginning of Clarissa's plan.

It was supposed to be the end of it.
