Chapter 1: The Two Words That Changed Everything

I was only coming home early to surprise my six-year-old daughter.

I had a small white box in my hand.

A gift I had spent most of the afternoon choosing for Lily.

But when the massive mahogany doors of my mansion opened, I didn't hear my daughter running toward me.

I heard her crying.

Then Vanessa's voice echoed through the foyer.

"I'M SICK OF YOU."

"GET LOST, YOU LITTLE BRAT!"

I stopped cold.

My daughter was curled up on the marble floor with both hands pressed over her ears, clutching her old brown teddy bear against her chest as if it were the only thing in the world that could protect her.

Our housekeeper was kneeling beside her, desperately trying to shield Lily with her own body.

And Vanessa—the woman I was planning to marry—was standing over them.

She had no idea I was home.

I said her name.

"Vanessa."

She turned around.

The color drained from her face.

I didn't ask what had happened.

I didn't give her a chance to explain.

I walked right past her, dropped to my knees, pulled my daughter into my arms, and looked directly at the woman I had once planned to spend the rest of my life with.

"Pack your things."

Vanessa thought that was the worst moment of her life.

She was wrong.

Because later that night, Lily finally told me what Vanessa had forced her to keep secret for months.

Then I checked the mansion's security system.

Every recording covering Lily's part of the house had been erased.

Not one day.

Not one week.

Months.

Then our housekeeper placed something on the table that she had quietly kept hidden.

Something that had been taken from the very teddy bear Lily refused to let go of.

What was inside made me call my attorney before midnight.

Because Vanessa had never wanted to simply marry me.

She wanted something that belonged to my daughter.

And the most terrifying part?

The plan may have started before Lily's mother ever passed.
