Lily wouldn't let go of the teddy bear all night.
Even after I carried her to bed, she held it against her chest with both arms wrapped tight.
I sat beside her until her breathing slowed.
Then I gently asked her what Vanessa used to say to her when I wasn't home.
She didn't answer right away.
Then, in the smallest voice I've ever heard, she said:
"She told me Mommy left something for me.
And that if I told you, she would take it away forever."
My chest went cold.
Her mother had been g*ne for fourteen months.
I went back downstairs.
Our housekeeper, Rosa, was still sitting at the kitchen table.
Her hands were folded.
Her face was pale.
"How long have you known?" I asked.
She looked at me for a long moment.
"Since the week after the funeral," she said quietly.
"Vanessa came to me first.
Before she ever came to you."
I didn't understand what that meant.
Not yet.
Rosa reached into her apron pocket and placed a small folded envelope on the table.
It was addressed to Lily.
In her mother's handwriting.
The postmark was dated three days before the accident.
Vanessa had been keeping it for over a year.
