Chapter 2: The Camera That Was Supposed to Be Broken

The detective arrived within minutes.

Emma was still on the floor, one hand pressed to her side, the other clutching her phone.

She hadn't moved.

She was afraid to.

"Don't touch anything," the detective said as he stepped through the front door.

The sister-in-law — still in her green dress — spun toward him.

"This woman fell on her own.

We all saw it.

She's trying to make trouble for this family."

The detective didn't look at her.

He was looking at the ceiling.

At the corner of the hallway, just above the staircase — a small security camera.

Emma saw it too.

Her eyes filled with tears, but this time they weren't from pain.

The sister-in-law followed his gaze.

Her face went pale.

"That camera," she said quickly, "it hasn't worked in months."

The detective turned to her slowly.

"Then you won't mind if we check."

The room went completely silent.

Then one of the older maids stepped forward.

Her hands were shaking.

She opened her mouth, closed it, then looked directly at Emma.

"I saw everything," she whispered.

"I've been too scared to say it until now."

The sister-in-law took one step toward her.

"Don't you dare—"

"Ma'am." The detective raised one hand.

"Step back."

Something was about to come out.

Something that had been buried in this mansion for a long time.
