Chapter 5: The Older Footage

Detective Hale set a tablet on the bed beside Emma's hand.

"This was stored on the same server.

Dated fourteen months ago — about six weeks before you and Daniel were married."

He pressed play.

The footage was from the same hallway camera.

The angle was identical.

The timestamp in the corner read 11:22 p.m.

Emma watched.

Diana was in the hallway.

She was not alone.

She was standing with a man Emma didn't recognize — older, heavyset, in a dark coat.

They were speaking quietly, but the camera had audio.

Diana's voice came through clearly.

"If she finds out before the wedding, it falls apart.

All of it."

The man said something Emma couldn't quite catch.

Diana again: "Just make sure the paperwork goes through before he signs anything in her name.

Once they're married, it's too late for him to change the structure."

The man nodded.

He handed Diana an envelope.

She took it without looking at it and walked away.

The footage ended.

Emma stared at the tablet.

Daniel had turned from the window.

He was standing very still.

"Daniel," Emma said quietly.

"Who is that man?"

Daniel's jaw was tight.

"His name is Fowler.

He's been my father's estate attorney for twenty years."

"And what paperwork was Diana talking about?"

He didn't answer immediately.

"Daniel."

"There was a restructuring," he said.

"Before the wedding.

My father moved some assets.

He said it was for tax purposes."

"Did you know about it?"

A pause that lasted one second too long.

"I knew there was a restructuring," he said.

"I didn't know the details."

Emma looked at Detective Hale.

"What does it mean?" she asked.

"What was she trying to prevent?"

"We're still pulling the financial records," the detective said.

"But based on what we can see so far — if you had known about the restructuring before the wedding, you or your attorney might have requested a prenuptial agreement that protected your interest in certain assets.

Without that, those assets passed out of reach the moment you signed the marriage certificate." He let that sit for a moment.

"Someone made sure you didn't know."

The room was very quiet.

Emma looked at her husband.

"Did your father know?" she asked.

Daniel walked back to the chair.

He sat down heavily.

He put his face in his hands.

That was her answer.

"How long?" she said.

Her voice was still steady.

She was holding it steady by force.

"How long has your family been planning around me instead of including me?"

He looked up.

His eyes were red at the edges.

"Emma, I didn't know what Diana was doing.

I swear to you I didn't know."

"But your father did."

He didn't deny it.

"And you knew there was a restructuring you didn't explain to me."

"I thought it was routine.

I thought—"

"You thought I didn't need to know." She looked at him for a long moment.

"That's the same thing, Daniel.

That's exactly the same thing."

He reached for her hand again.

This time she moved it away.

Not dramatically — just a quiet withdrawal, back to her own lap, her fingers resting over her belly.

Detective Hale stood.

"I'll give you some time," he said.

"We'll have the full footage analysis and the financial review by morning.

I'll be back at nine." He looked at Emma.

"Try to rest."

He left.

The room was just the two of them now.

Daniel and Emma and the monitor beeping softly and the city lights outside the window.

"I love you," Daniel said.

It came out like a confession.

Emma looked at the window.

"I know you do," she said.

"But love isn't the same as choosing me.

And your family has never chosen me.

Not once."

He didn't argue.

There was nothing to argue with.

She closed her eyes.

In the hallway outside, she heard footsteps — the night nurse making rounds.

Normal sounds.

Ordinary sounds.

The sounds of a world that had no idea what was sitting inside room 214 right now, quietly rearranging itself into something none of them had planned for.

Her phone lit up on the bedside table.

A text from a number she didn't recognize.

*You should ask your husband about the account in his sister's name.

The one opened four months after your wedding.

Ask him what it was funded with.*

Emma stared at the screen.

She turned her head and looked at Daniel.

He was looking at his own phone.

May you like

His face had gone the color of ash.

He had received the same message.
