Chapter 1: She Was Waiting for Proof
"Daddy…" she cried.
"But I'm a human being."
Near the doorway, housekeeper Emma Clark stood trembling while holding a smartphone.
She showed Vittorio a video she had recorded earlier.
On the screen, Bianca repeatedly forced Lucy toward the dog bowl.
Marcus Hale stood nearby laughing.
Then he shut the breakfast-room door.
Marcus suddenly lunged toward Emma's phone.
Vittorio moved Lucy safely beside Emma, blocked Marcus's arm, and sent him crashing backward through the antique map rack.
Bianca reached toward Lucy.
Vittorio knocked her hand away and pushed her back onto the leather ottoman.
Then he placed the dog bowl directly in front of his fiancée.
"Enjoy your last meal."
Bianca went pale.
But Vittorio kept staring at Emma's trembling phone.
She had begun recording before he ever stepped into the room.
Which meant Emma hadn't been surprised by what happened that morning.
She had been waiting for proof.
