Chapter 2: The Photograph on the Phone
Vanessa’s lips trembled.
“You’d throw me out over money?”
“Over betrayal,” Daniel said.
“There’s a difference.”
Julian slowly held out the car keys.
“Dad, I didn’t know where the money came from.
I don’t want the car.”
Vanessa spun toward him.
“Don’t you dare take her side!”
Maya lifted her tear-streaked face.
“Why do you hate me so much?”
For one second, Vanessa looked frightened rather than angry.
“This isn’t about you.”
“Then what is it about?” Daniel demanded.
Before Vanessa could answer, her phone rang.
The screen showed MOM.
Daniel put the call on speaker.
“Vanessa?” her mother said anxiously.
“Why did you send me that strange message?
I never asked you for vacation money.”
Everyone went still.
Daniel stared at Vanessa.
“You said she needed $50,000.”
“I can explain,” Vanessa whispered, reaching for the phone.
Daniel pulled it away as another notification appeared—a message from an unknown number.
The preview read: “I received the money.
Now keep Daniel from finding out who I am.”
Julian’s face drained of color.
“Mom…
who is that?”
Vanessa lunged for the phone, but Daniel opened the message—and froze when he saw the photograph attached beneath it.
