Chapter 7: The Voice on the Recording

Vanessa gripped the back of a chair.
“That recording was manipulated.”
Martin nodded quickly.
“Daniel has access to editing software.”
Daniel looked at him.
“I repair heating systems.
I can barely crop a photograph.”
The investigator placed a tablet on the table.
“Mrs.
Brooks, listen carefully.”
Vanessa’s recorded voice filled the kitchen: “Yes, this is Daniel Brooks.
I authorize the full advance.”
Julian stared at his mother.
“You pretended to be Dad?”
“I was protecting what belonged to me.”
“The house belonged to all of us,” Maya said.
Martin edged toward the hallway.
The second investigator stepped into his path.
“Please remain here.”
Victor’s sports car stopped outside.
He hurried through the open front door, waving his phone.
“Vanessa emptied my account!” he shouted.
“The fifty thousand is gone.”
Vanessa turned on him.
“You were supposed to stay away.”
“You transferred it to Martin.”
Martin raised both hands.
“Do not involve me.”
Victor laughed.
“Your name is on the account.”
The first investigator looked at Daniel.
“May we see the emails?”
Ruth handed him a fresh copy from her purse.
“I printed three sets.”
Vanessa stared at her mother.
“You planned this.”
“No,” Ruth said.
“I finally stopped cleaning up after you.”
Victor pointed at Vanessa.
“She arranged everything.
She promised me ten thousand dollars if I frightened Daniel into letting her leave.”
“You demanded money for staying silent about Julian,” Vanessa fired back.
“And you offered more if I helped frame Daniel.”
Julian lifted his phone higher.
“Keep talking.”
Victor saw the red recording symbol and charged toward him.
Daniel stepped between them.
“Get away from my son.”
“He is my son.”
Julian’s voice did not shake.
“No.
You supplied the truth too late and a threat too early.
Daniel is my father.”
Victor stopped.
The investigators separated Martin, Vanessa, and Victor.
Martin immediately pointed at the others.
“I’ll cooperate,” he said.
“Vanessa gave me Daniel’s laptop.
Victor supplied the identification.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Coward.”
“You were leaving me with the paperwork.”
“You forged the signature.”
“You wrote the instructions.”
The investigator closed the folder.
“We have enough to secure the devices and freeze the receiving accounts.”
Vanessa looked at Daniel.
“Tell them this was a family misunderstanding.”
“You emptied Maya’s fund, tried to borrow against our home, and prepared to blame me.”
“If you do this, Julian will lose his mother.”
Julian lowered his phone.
“I lost her when she priced Maya’s future at thirty-five thousand dollars and a red bow.”
Three months later, Daniel stood beside Maya and Julian in the county courtroom.
Vanessa, Victor, and Martin faced the judge at separate tables.
The prosecutor turned first to Victor.
“The diverted funds were recovered from the account Martin controlled.
Mr.
Hale has agreed to repay ten thousand dollars for his role and serve eighteen months under supervised release.”
Victor looked back at Julian.
“I only wanted a chance to know you.”
“You wanted money,” Julian said.
“A chance would have begun with an apology.”
Martin received a two-year sentence for forgery, identity theft, and attempting to obtain the home-equity advance.
His professional license was revoked before he left the courtroom.
Then Vanessa stood.
The judge looked over her glasses.
“You will repay the remaining college-fund loss, serve three years of supervised probation, complete six hundred hours of community service, and have no access to Daniel Brooks’s financial accounts.”
Vanessa turned before the officer led her away.
“Daniel, one day the children will understand that I was trying to escape a life where nobody saw me.”
Maya rose.
“We saw you.
You just didn’t see us.”
Vanessa’s lips parted, but the officer guided her through the side door.
Outside, Daniel’s phone rang.
Maya’s university number appeared on the screen.
He answered and put it on speaker.
“Mr.
May you like
Brooks,” the admissions director said, “we received the partial tuition payment, but the deadline has passed.
Unless the remaining balance is secured by Friday, Maya will lose her place.”
