Karen didn't stay down long.
She dragged herself upright, mud streaming down her face, her gold gown destroyed.
The crowd parted as she staggered toward the terrace steps, shaking — not from pain, but from fury.
"Do you have ANY idea who I am?!" she screamed up at Maya.
"My husband OWNS this estate.
You and your crippled father will be removed from these grounds and charged for this!"
Maya didn't flinch.
Her father placed a steady hand on her arm.
"Let her speak," he said quietly.
That's when an older gentleman in a dark suit stepped forward from the crowd.
He had been standing near the back, silent the entire time.
He looked at Karen with an expression that made several guests step away from her.
"Actually," he said, his voice calm and measured, "I own this estate."
Karen froze.
"And I invited Maya and her father here personally." He paused.
"The question I have, Karen, is why you felt entitled to str*ke a guest at my home."
The color drained from Karen's mud-covered face.
"I…
I didn't know she was—"
"No," the man said.
"You didn't ask." He turned to Maya.
"Are you alright?"
Maya nodded slowly, watching Karen with steady eyes.
But then Karen's phone buzzed loudly in the mud beside her.
She glanced at the screen — and her expression shifted from rage to something that looked almost like terror.
