Chapter 2: The Fear on Margaret's Face

Frank moved first.
His hand closed around Emily's arm before she could touch Noah.
"Back away," he said.
"Now."
"Let go of me." Emily didn't flinch.
"That blanket is trapping heat around his body.
He's not cold — he's overheating.
His airway is swelling from the inside because you've been warming him for twenty minutes."
The lead medic went very still.
"She's a maid," Frank said.
"Get her out."
"She might be right." The medic's voice dropped.
He looked at Noah, then at the heating equipment still running beside the crib.
His jaw tightened.
"Turn it off.
All of it.
Now."
Frank looked at me.
I couldn't speak.
Emily pulled free and pressed two fingers gently below Noah's jaw.
"He needs cold.
Not more oxygen.
The swelling won't go down until the heat stops."
The monitor was still flat.
Margaret Collins made a sound near the doorway — not a sob, something worse.
I turned and saw her face.
She wasn't looking at Noah.
She was looking at Emily.
And the expression on Margaret's face wasn't grief.
It was fear.
"How do you know that?" I heard myself say.
Emily didn't answer.
Her hands were already moving.
The room shifted around her.
And somewhere behind me, Frank said quietly, "Mr.
Carter — I need to show you something.
About who she really is."
