Chapter 5: The Woman Who Was Never Just a Nanny

I looked at the photograph for a long time.
Margaret and Holt.
Standing close.
Not the posture of strangers at a charity event.
The posture of people who had been talking for years.
"How long have you had this?" I asked Frank.
"Three hours.
I started pulling threads the moment I saw her face in the nursery." He tapped the photograph.
"This was taken eleven months ago outside the hospital's administrative building.
Six weeks after Elena's license was suspended."
I looked at Elena.
"You knew Margaret was connected to Holt."
"I suspected." She said it carefully, like someone who had been careful with words for a long time.
"Holt was the one who filed the error report against me.
The child who d*ed — his airway presentation was identical to what I saw tonight with Noah.
I had recommended cooling protocol.
Holt overrode me.
He ordered continued warming." She paused.
"The child didn't survive the next hour."
"And Holt blamed you."
"Holt needed someone to blame who couldn't fight back." She looked at her hands.
"I was twenty-two.
I had no tenure, no allies in the department, no family with money or connections.
I was the easiest person in that room to sacrifice."
"So you disappeared," I said.
"I needed to understand why he did it.
I needed to get close to the people around him without anyone knowing who I was." She looked up.
"Margaret Collins was his personal reference when he applied for the chief position four years ago.
I found that in the public record.
When your posting came up — night nanny, live-in, North Shore — and I saw her name on the household staff list —"
"You applied for the maid position," I said.
"Yes."
Frank leaned back in his chair.
"She's been in your house for eight months collecting information on the relationship between Margaret and Holt."
"What have you found?" I asked her.
Elena reached into the pocket of her jacket and placed a small USB drive on the table beside Frank's folder.
"Margaret has been routing payments from Holt's private medical consulting account through a shell company she controls.
He pays her to manage problems.
I'm not the first doctor he's done this to.
There are at least two others — both women, both early in their careers, both in pediatric specialties where his authority was absolute."
The room was very still.
"He kjlled a child," I said.
"And then he buried the doctor who tried to save him."
"Yes."
I stood up.
Walked to the window.
The city was dark and wet and indifferent below me, and I stood there until I trusted my voice again.
"Frank," I said.
"Already thinking about it."
"I want Holt and Margaret in a room.
I want to know everything before I decide what to do with it."
"That's going to take —"
"I don't care what it takes." I turned around.
"Elena."
She looked at me.
"You came into my house under a false name to investigate the man who destroyed your career."
"Yes."
"And tonight you saved my son's life."
She said nothing.
"Those two things are going to create a very complicated conversation."
"I know," she said quietly.
A doctor appeared in the doorway.
Young, tired, still in scrubs.
"Mr.
Carter?
I'm Dr.
Reyes.
Your son is stable.
His airway has responded well to the cooling protocol.
We're going to keep him overnight for observation, but —" She paused, and the pause held something good in it.
"He's going to be fine."
I sat back down.
Not because I chose to.
Because my legs simply stopped.
Frank put his hand on my shoulder once, briefly, and then removed it.
Elena looked at the floor.
Her jaw was tight.
Her eyes were bright.
"The cooling protocol," I said to Dr.
Reyes.
"Who recommended it?"
Dr.
Reyes glanced at her clipboard.
"The notes from the paramedic team indicate it was initiated on-scene by —" She looked up.
"A Emily Parker?"
"Yes," I said.
"That's right."
After Dr.
Reyes left, the three of us sat in silence for a moment.
Then Frank picked up the USB drive, turned it over in his fingers, and said, "Raymond Holt has privileges at this hospital."
I looked at him.
May you like
"He could be in this building right now," Frank said.
Elena's head came up.
