Chapter 1: The Bruise She Was Never Meant to Find

Four-year-old Maisie had stopped asking when her stepmother was coming home.
Ethan should have been relieved.
Instead, he became afraid of the reason why.
Two nights after he watched Corinne shove his daughter from her bicycle, he was helping Maisie into her pajamas when he noticed a fading bruise high on her arm.
It was small enough that he might have ignored it a week earlier, the sort of mark adults explain away because children fall, climb, bump into furniture, and forget what happened five minutes later.
This time, Ethan asked gently where it came from.
Maisie did not answer at first.
She pulled her sleeve down over it and glanced toward the bedroom door.
That frightened him more than the bruise.
He sat beside her and told her she was not in trouble, that she could tell him anything, and that nobody was allowed to punish her for speaking honestly.
Maisie kept twisting the ear of her stuffed rabbit between her fingers.
Then she asked softly, "Is she really gone?"
Ethan felt something tighten in his chest.
"For now, yes."
Maisie looked at him for several seconds, as if deciding whether "for now" was safe enough.
Then she whispered something Ethan would remember for the rest of his life.
"She said if I made you mad, you might send me away too."
Ethan did not move.
Corinne had never said anything like that in front of him.
Maisie continued, speaking slowly now that the words had started coming.
"She said Mommy left because I was difficult.
And if I was difficult again, you could leave too."
For nearly three years, Ethan had believed his daughter's sudden anxiety, her need to know when he would be home, and the way she apologized for tiny mistakes were all part of losing her mother too young.
Seated beside her bed that night, he finally understood that grief had been covering something else.
And downstairs, inside a locked cabinet he had not opened since Eleanor d*ed, there was a document Corinne had already found before him.
It contained Maisie's name.
A trust fund.
And instructions for what would happen if Ethan were no longer alive.
Ethan thought he had caught his wife hurting his daughter.
He had no idea he had just interrupted a plan that was meant to leave him g*ne.
