Chapter 2: The Key She Was Never Supposed to Find

Part 2 ⬇️
Ethan waited until Maisie was asleep.
Then he went downstairs.
The cabinet lock had not been forced.
It had been opened cleanly, by someone who knew where the spare key was kept.
Only two people had ever known that.
One of them was Eleanor.
The other was Ethan himself.
He pulled the trust document out and set it on the kitchen table.
Corinne had left a single fingerprint on the inside cover.
She had not bothered to hide it.
That told him she had never expected him to look.
He called his brother Marcus just after midnight.
"I need you to tell me something honestly," Ethan said.
"Did Corinne ever ask you about Eleanor's estate?
Before we were married?"
The pause on the other end lasted too long.
"Marcus."
"She asked me once," Marcus said quietly.
"I thought she was just…
I thought she cared about Maisie's future.
I didn't think—"
"How long ago?"
Another pause.
"About a month before you proposed to her."
Ethan sat down slowly.
Corinne had known about the trust before he had ever put a ring on her finger.
He was still sitting there when his phone lit up with a message from a number he didn't recognize.
It said: *You should ask her where she was the night Eleanor's car went off the road.*
