Chapter 2: The Signature That Wasn’t Mine

Alexis gathered her dress and rushed toward the sedan, pounding on the tinted window.
“What did you do?” she demanded.
“They’re taking everything away!”
I lowered the window slightly.
“You asked me to leave.
I’m simply taking my money with me.”
Caleb hurried behind her.
“Mom, please fix this.
Everyone is watching.”
“They were watching when your fiancée humiliated me,” I replied.
“You said nothing.”
His face reddened, but before he could answer, the event coordinator called again.
“Susan, there’s something else,” she said through the speaker.
“Alexis submitted a revised payment form this morning.
It requests that any unused funds be transferred to a different account after the wedding.”
Alexis stopped pounding on the window.
“I never approved that,” I said.
“I suspected you hadn’t,” the coordinator replied.
“Because the signature doesn’t match yours.”
Caleb slowly turned toward Alexis.
“What is she talking about?”
Alexis’s smug expression vanished.
“Susan is confused.
She promised us that money.”
Then the coordinator added, “I also have the email Alexis sent with the form—and Caleb, you need to see what she wrote about your mother.”
Caleb went completely still.
