Chapter 2: The Signature on the Forms

“You still don’t know who you ordered out,” Lady Eleanor whispered.
I stepped back, my face burning.
“Julian, tell her to leave.
This is our wedding.”
His jaw tightened.
“She owns this estate.
She also controls the family trust—and she is my mother.”
A murmur swept through the ballroom.
“You told me your mother was too ill to attend,” I stammered.
“No,” Julian replied.
“I said she wished to meet you without her title.”
Lady Eleanor placed a cream envelope on the table.
“I wanted to learn how you treated someone you believed was powerless.”
My hands began to tremble.
“This is ridiculous.
You cannot take away what Julian promised me.”
“That authorization wasn’t a wedding gift,” she said.
“It was a test.”
Julian opened the envelope and removed several bank records.
His face changed as he read the first page.
“What is that?” I demanded.
He looked up slowly.
“Three transfers were requested from my account yesterday.”
“I never requested anything!”
“Then explain why your name is on every form.”
Before I could answer, a woman near the ballroom doors raised her phone.
“She didn’t sign them,” the stranger announced.
“But I know who did.”
Lady Eleanor’s smile vanished as the woman stepped forward—and Julian whispered a name I never expected to hear.
