Chapter 2: The Key on the Table

Arthur held Lily tight, his hands still shaking.

She buried her face in his chest and wouldn't let go.

Gwen didn't move.

She stood at the top of the stairs, arms crossed, her expression cold.

"You're overreacting, Arthur.

I didn't touch her."

"I saw you." His voice was low.

"I saw your hands."

"She was leaning over the railing.

I was trying to pull her back."

Lily lifted her head.

"That's not true, Daddy.

She pushed me.

She said I needed to learn what happens when I don't listen."

The room went silent.

Gwen's jaw tightened.

"She's a child.

She's lying."

Arthur set Lily down gently and walked up the stairs, one slow step at a time.

"How long has this been going on?"

Gwen said nothing.

"Lily." He turned back to his daughter.

"Has she done anything like this before?"

Lily hesitated.

Then she nodded.

Arthur looked back at Gwen.

Something in his face had changed.

Not anger anymore.

Something colder.

"I want you out of this house in the next ten minutes.

And I'm calling someone."

Gwen finally moved — but not toward the door.

She reached into her pocket and placed something on the side table.

A key.

"You'll want to know what that opens," she said quietly.

"Before you make any calls."
