Chapter 4: Unit 114

Arthur waited until Lily was asleep.
He sat on the edge of her bed until her breathing slowed and her grip on his hand loosened.
Then he tucked the blanket up around her shoulders, turned off the lamp, and stood in the dark for a moment just watching her.
She looked so small.
He drove to Marsh Road at half past nine.
The storage facility was the kind that never fully closed — a keypad at the gate, fluorescent lights humming over rows of orange roller doors.
He found unit 114 at the far end of the second row.
The key turned on the first try.
He pulled the door up.
The unit was not large.
Maybe eight feet deep.
But it was organized — carefully, deliberately organized, the way Claire organized everything.
Shelves along one wall.
Boxes labeled in her handwriting.
A small table in the center with a single wooden chair pulled up to it, as though someone had sat there to think.
Arthur stepped inside.
The first box he opened held documents.
Bank statements for an account he had never seen.
Statements going back four years.
The balance was not small.
He set them aside and opened the next box.
Photographs.
He recognized the first one immediately.
It was taken outside the house — their house — but the date stamp in the corner read eighteen months before he and Claire had met.
Claire was in the photo.
So was a man Arthur didn't recognize.
They were standing close together.
Not romantically.
Something else.
The man had his hand on Claire's arm and his expression was not kind.
Arthur turned the photograph over.
On the back, in Claire's handwriting: *He found us again.
Moving the documents here.*
He opened a third box.
Legal papers.
A restraining order, granted and then expired.
Filed under Claire's maiden name — a name she had never mentioned to him.
A police report from seven years ago.
And beneath that, a manila envelope sealed with tape, his name written across the front in Claire's handwriting.
*Arthur.
If you're reading this, I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner.
I was afraid of what you'd think.
I was afraid of what he'd do.
Please read everything before you decide anything.*
His phone buzzed in his pocket.
He pulled it out.
Unknown number.
He let it ring.
It rang again immediately.
He answered.
Silence for a moment.
Then a man's voice, low and unhurried.
"You found the unit."
Arthur's hand tightened on the phone.
"Who is this?"
"Someone who knew your wife a long time before you did." A pause.
"Put the envelope down, Arthur.
You don't want to open that tonight."
"How do you know where I am?"
"Because I've been watching that unit for six weeks," the man said.
"Waiting to see who came for the key."
The fluorescent light above Arthur flickered once.
"What do you want?"
"A conversation," the man said.
"That's all.
Somewhere public.
Somewhere safe." Another pause.
"There are things in that envelope that will change how you understand your marriage.
I'd rather you hear the context first.
From someone who was there."
Arthur looked at the envelope in his hand.
Claire's handwriting.
His name.
"Give me one reason I should trust you."
The man was quiet for a moment.
"Because I'm the one who sent Gwen to your house," he said.
"And I sent her to protect Lily.
May you like
Not to hurt her."
The light flickered again and went still.
