Chapter 2: The Second Set of Accounts

Grace glanced once at Vanessa.
Not at her face, but at the company badge hanging from her handbag.
“You brought your vice president to an investor conference?” Grace asked.
Ethan’s jaw tightened.
“This isn’t what it looks like.”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Grace, let me explain.”
“No,” Grace said calmly.
“You’ve both explained enough.”
The elevator doors opened, but Declan placed one hand against them.
“We’re running out of time, Mrs.
Calloway.”
Ethan stared at the black folder.
“What meeting?”
Grace held his gaze.
“One you were supposed to attend.”
His face changed.
Declan noticed.
“So he truly doesn’t know.”
“Know what?” Ethan demanded.
Grace opened the folder just enough for him to see a document bearing the Calloway Industries logo.
Ethan reached for it.
Declan blocked his hand.
“You don’t touch anything that belongs to my client.”
“Your client?” Ethan looked at Grace.
“Since when do you have business with Pierce Global?”
Vanessa suddenly gripped Ethan’s arm.
“We need to leave.
Now.”
Grace’s eyes narrowed.
“Why are you afraid of that folder, Vanessa?”
“I’m not.”
Then a phone inside the folder began to ring.
Grace checked the screen and turned it toward Ethan.
The caller’s name made the color drain from his face.
It was his company’s chief financial officer—the man Ethan had been told disappeared three days earlier.
Grace answered and put the call on speaker.
A trembling voice said, “Mrs.
Calloway, I found the second set of accounts.
Vanessa Reed didn’t act alone.”
Ethan froze.
Then the man said his name.
May you like
Grace thought Ethan’s betrayal was the worst secret—but the documents exposed something much bigger.
