Chapter 8: The Recording at the Marina

Declan called his security chief while Grace remained on the hospital bed.

“Send the marina team now,” he said.

“Keep the line open.”

Ethan grabbed his jacket.

“I’m going there.”

Grace stopped him.

“Why?

To rescue Martin or destroy the recording?”

“You think I’m capable of anything now.”

“I think you taught me to ask.”

At the marina, Martin stood beside Vanessa’s car with an empty drive in his hand.

Declan’s security chief spoke through Grace’s phone.

“We can see them,” he said.

“Local officers are entering from the east gate.”

Vanessa held out her palm.

“Give me the drive.”

“Show me the money,” Martin replied.

“You are in no position to negotiate.”

“You offered five hundred thousand.”

“I offered you a future.

Grace will blame you when the company collapses.”

Martin lifted his phone.

“Tell me again what you want erased.”

Vanessa’s eyes dropped to the glowing screen.

“You’re recording me.”

She knocked the phone from his hand and ran toward the dock.

Two officers stepped from behind a parked truck.

“Vanessa Reed, stop.”

Her red heels skidded against the wet boards.

She turned and saw Declan’s security team blocking the other end.

Back at the hospital, Grace heard Vanessa shout through the open call.

“This was Ethan’s plan!

Ask him who signed the first transfers!”

Ethan sat down hard.

Grace looked at him.

“She is telling the truth about that part.”

He covered his face.

“I thought the money would return before the audit.”

“You risked hundreds of jobs.”

“I never knew about the other accounts.”

“You knew enough to hide the first ones.”

Miriam entered carrying a tablet.

“The court granted an emergency order freezing the five shell accounts.

The board meeting resumes by video in twenty minutes.”

Grace pushed herself upright.

“Bring me my coat.”

“You gave birth hours ago,” Eleanor said.

“And Vanessa filed a statement calling me medically unfit to control the company.”

Miriam turned the tablet around.

Vanessa’s attorney had submitted a copy of Grace’s private prenatal chart.

Ethan stared at it.

“I did not give her that.”

“No,” Miriam said.

“Your custody attorney did.

His email account shows your authorization.”

“I only asked what options existed.”

Grace swung her feet to the floor.

“You gave her the door.

Stop pretending you are shocked that she walked through it.”

The board appeared on the hospital-room screen.

Harold spoke first.

“Grace, we can postpone.”

“No.

Call the vote.”

Ethan moved into view.

“The board cannot transfer control to someone recovering in a hospital.”

Grace looked toward the neonatal unit beyond the glass.

“My daughter is fighting to breathe two corridors away.

Do not confuse my location with weakness.”

Miriam presented the trust amendment, Martin’s saved files, Eleanor’s recording, and the marina recording.

One by one, the directors voted to remove Ethan as chief executive.

Harold’s voice was last.

“The motion passes unanimously.”

Two officers entered the room before Ethan could speak.

“Ethan Calloway, we have a warrant concerning unauthorized transfers and the release of protected medical information.”

He turned to Grace.

“Tell them I cooperated.”

“You cooperated when there was nowhere left to run.”

An officer guided him toward the door.

Ethan looked back.

“I did love you, Grace.

I just loved being important more.”

The door closed behind him.

On the tablet, Vanessa sat in an interview room at the marina station.

Her attorney leaned toward the camera.

“My client will provide evidence against Ethan in exchange for consideration.”

Vanessa lifted her chin.

“He chose me because I made him feel powerful.”

Grace met her eyes through the screen.

“And you chose him because you thought his wife was powerless.”

Vanessa’s smile disappeared.

Miriam placed a final document before Grace.

“There is one more signature.”

“What is it?”

“Your appointment as chairwoman.”

May you like

Grace picked up the pen, but a neonatal alarm sounded down the corridor.

A nurse hurried through the doors toward her daughter’s room.
