Chapter 2: The Report on the Floor

“Those little boys are Mark’s sons.”

Emily’s hand fell from her belly.

Mark stared at Diane, then at me.

“That’s impossible,” he said.

“Claire would have told me.”

“I tried,” I replied, pulling a worn envelope from my handbag.

“I sent this after my first ultrasound.”

Mark’s face tightened when he saw his own handwriting across the front: RETURN TO SENDER.

“You wrote that you wanted no further contact,” I said.

“So I protected my children from a man who had already rejected them.”

“You kept my sons from me!” Mark shouted.

“No.

You refused to hear they existed.”

Emily slowly rose from her chair.

“You told me Claire was obsessed with you.

You said she kept begging you to come back.”

“I never contacted him again,” I said.

“That’s a lie!” Mark snapped.

But Diane picked up the envelope and pulled out the ultrasound photograph.

A folded medical report slipped onto the floor.

Emily bent down first.

After reading the date, she looked at Mark with fear in her eyes.

“Mark,” she whispered, “this report was written three years before you met me.”

Then she turned the page—and read one sentence that made her grip the table for support.
