Chapter 8: The Signature Behind the Secret

We met at Rachel’s office the next morning.
Emily sat beside me while Diane and Daniel faced us across the table.
Mark had not been invited.
Rachel opened the clinic envelope.
“The donor authorization came from Mark’s patient portal, but the electronic signature was submitted from an address registered to his former business manager.”
Emily frowned.
“Why would his business manager access our fertility account?”
Daniel’s face tightened.
“What was her name?”
“Vanessa Cole.”
Diane closed her eyes.
“Mark dated Vanessa before Claire.”
Emily turned toward her.
“He told me Vanessa was only an employee.”
“She was both,” Diane said.
Rachel slid the audit page toward Daniel.
“Do you recognize the address?”
“It belongs to a shell company Mark used to reimburse himself for medical expenses.”
Emily gripped the edge of the table.
“Are you saying Mark arranged donor treatment and pretended he knew nothing?”
“I’m saying we need the clinic’s original consent call,” Rachel replied.
Emily’s phone rang.
The clinic director’s name appeared on the screen.
“Put it on speaker,” Rachel said.
The director spoke carefully.
“Mrs.
Hayes, we completed our review.
The authorization recording was mislabeled under your husband’s portal.
The male speaker identified himself as Mark Hayes, but his security answers were incorrect.”
“Then why did you proceed?”
“The staff member manually overrode the warning.
That employee was Vanessa Cole.”
Emily’s hand covered her belly.
“Whose donor sample was used?”
“We cannot release donor identity without a court order.
However, the sample number on your chart does not match the anonymous donor selected in your treatment plan.”
Nobody spoke.
Rachel broke the silence.
“Preserve everything.
You’ll receive a subpoena today.”
When the call ended, Emily pushed back her chair.
“My child was conceived using a sample I never approved.”
I reached for her hand.
“This is not your fault.”
She looked at me through tears.
“I stood beside him while he called you the wrong woman.”
“You believed your husband.”
“So did you.”
Diane moved beside Emily and wrapped both arms around her.
Emily resisted for one second, then collapsed against her shoulder.
“I don’t know who my baby’s father is,” she sobbed.
“You know who her mother is,” Diane said.
“Start there.”
A knock sounded.
Mark entered before Rachel could stop him.
“This meeting concerns my wife and my child.”
Emily removed her ring and set it on the table.
“I’m filing for divorce.”
“You’re emotional.”
“I’m informed.”
Mark looked at the clinic papers.
“Vanessa handled insurance.
If she made an error, that has nothing to do with me.”
Daniel opened his laptop.
“Then you won’t mind hearing this.”
He played a restored call recovered from the clinic archive.
Vanessa’s voice came first.
“The sample number you requested is ready, but Emily cannot know.”
Then Mark answered.
“She doesn’t need to know.
She needs a pregnancy, and I need everyone to stop asking questions.”
Emily stood so quickly her chair fell.
“You chose a sample without my consent?”
Mark’s jaw tightened.
“I gave you what you wanted.”
“You gave yourself a performance.”
“I protected our marriage.”
“You built our marriage on a lie.”
He turned to me.
“This is your fault.
None of this would have happened if you had stayed away.”
“No,” I said.
“None of this would have surfaced if you hadn’t invited me there to hurt me.”
Rachel stepped between us.
“You need to leave.”
Mark pointed at the laptop.
“That recording was obtained illegally.”
“It came from the clinic under Emily’s written request.”
“I’ll sue all of you.”
Emily picked up her ring and placed it in his palm.
“Add my name to the list.”
Mark closed his fingers around it.
“You’ll come back when you see what life costs without me.”
“I already saw what life cost with you.”
His face hardened.
Before he reached the door, Rachel spoke.
“The family court has scheduled an emergency hearing for tomorrow.
The judge has the clinic audit, Daniel’s statement, Diane’s recordings, and your call about using the twins to control Claire.”
Mark stopped with his hand on the knob.
“You think a judge will take sons away from their father?”
I stood beside Rachel.
“No,” I said.
“I think a judge will protect two children from a man who only wanted them after they embarrassed him.”
Mark opened the door.
Then a uniformed process server waiting in the hallway handed him three envelopes.
One was from Emily.
May you like
One was from the clinic.
And one was a subpoena ordering him to surrender every device connected to Vanessa Cole.
