Chapter 1: The Night He Came Home Early
He Found His Four-Year-Old Daughter Searching The Trash For Food
Ryan Dawson had just reached the front door when the garbage bin beside the porch started shaking.
At first, he thought an animal had gotten inside.
Then came another violent thump.
Rattle.
Bang.
Ryan dropped his keys and rushed toward it.
He yanked the lid open.
What he found inside made his stomach drop.
His four-year-old daughter was buried headfirst in the trash.
Both legs were sticking out of the bin.
Sophie was digging desperately through garbage for something to eat.
Ryan grabbed her legs, lifted carefully, then supported her body as he pulled her free.
She was filthy.
Her hair was tangled.
Her face was wet with tears.
"What happened?!"
Sophie clung to him.
In her mouth was a stripped chicken bone with almost nothing left on it.
She lowered it and whispered through her crying.
"I'm so hungry, Daddy."
Ryan froze.
He had been sending money home.
Enough money for food.
Enough money for everything Sophie needed.
"Where's Kelly?!
I sent money!
She didn't feed you?!"
Sophie buried her face against his chest.
Then she forced out the answer.
"She says good food is only for her real son."
Ryan stopped breathing.
Then he turned toward the house.
He carried Sophie to the front door and kicked it once.
The wood exploded inward.
The frame splintered.
Broken pieces scattered across the hallway.
And beyond the ruined doorway, Ryan saw the truth.
Mason was seated comfortably at the dining table.
Clean clothes.
Warm food.
A huge feast spread around him.
Pizza.
Burgers.
Fries.
Mac-and-cheese.
And Kelly was placing an enormous platter of roast turkey in front of her own son.
Ryan stood in the shattered doorway holding Sophie.
The little girl was still crying against his chest.
Kelly turned toward the noise.
Her face went pale.
"I...
I can explain."
But Ryan was no longer looking for an explanation.
Sophie had been searching through garbage outside while another child ate from a table covered in food.
The money had been there.
The food had been there.
And Kelly had known exactly how hungry Sophie was.
Now the front door was broken.
The secret was exposed.
And the father she never expected home that night was standing between his starving daughter and the feast Kelly had decided was only for her own child.
