Chapter 2: The Padlock by the Bread Box

Part 2 ⬇️

Ryan set Sophie down gently on the hallway floor and stepped into the dining room.

Kelly backed against the wall.

"Ryan, please.

It wasn't like that—"

"Not like what?" His voice was low.

Controlled.

Worse than shouting.

"She was in the trash, Kelly.

Eating garbage."

"She's dramatic.

She had food earlier—"

"Don't."

Kelly flinched.

Ryan pulled out his phone and opened his bank app.

He turned the screen toward her.

"Fourteen hundred dollars.

Last month alone.

Where did it go?"

Kelly's eyes moved to Mason, then back to Ryan.

"The bills were high.

Things came up.

I didn't think—"

"You didn't think she'd tell me." Ryan looked at the table.

The turkey.

The fries.

The full plates.

Then he looked at his daughter standing in the hallway, still holding that stripped bone.

"How long?"

Kelly said nothing.

"How long has she been eating like this?"

Still nothing.

Then Sophie spoke from the doorway.

Small voice.

Certain words.

"Daddy…

she locks the kitchen at night."

Ryan turned slowly.

Kelly's face changed.

And on the counter behind her, Ryan noticed something he hadn't seen before — a small padlock.

Sitting right next to the bread box.
