Chapter 6: March the Fourteenth

He waited until Lily was in bed.
Rosa had agreed to stay the night — she had a small room near the kitchen that she had used occasionally over the years, and she settled in without being asked twice.
Adrian checked on Noah, who was sleeping deeply, then walked back downstairs and stood at the marble table with his phone in his hand.
He read the message three more times.
*You should ask your wife where she was the night of March 14th.
And who she was with.*
March 14th.
He turned the date over in his mind.
He had been in Singapore that week — a four-day acquisition meeting that had run long.
He remembered it clearly because he had called Lily on her birthday, the 13th, from a hotel room, and she had sounded strange on the phone.
Flat.
Careful.
He had told himself she was tired.
He opened his calendar and confirmed the dates.
He had landed back home on the 16th.
He thought about calling the unknown number back.
Instead, he forwarded the message to his attorney, a woman named Claire Ashworth, with a single line: *I need you first thing tomorrow.*
Then he poured himself a glass of water and sat down at the kitchen table.
He was still sitting there when Vanessa came downstairs at half past ten.
She had changed into different clothes.
She was carrying her coat and a small overnight bag.
"I'm going to stay at the Meridian tonight," she said.
"I think some space would be good for both of us."
Adrian looked at the bag.
"What's in it?"
"Clothes.
Personal items."
"Open it."
Her chin lifted.
"Excuse me?"
"Open the bag, Vanessa."
A pause.
Then she set it on the counter and unzipped it.
Clothes.
Toiletries.
Her passport.
A manila envelope.
Adrian reached for the envelope.
She put her hand on it first.
"That's personal correspondence," she said.
"It has nothing to do with—"
He looked at her hand on the envelope.
He looked at her face.
She moved her hand.
Inside the envelope were three things: a printed bank statement for an account he had never seen, a folded letter on cream paper, and a photograph.
The bank statement showed a balance of four hundred and twelve thousand dollars.
The account had been opened eighteen months ago.
Regular deposits, always just under the reporting threshold.
The most recent deposit was dated three days ago.
He unfolded the letter.
It was addressed to someone named D.
Reyes at an address in Miami.
It was signed with Vanessa's full name.
He looked at the photograph last.
It showed Vanessa at a restaurant table, laughing, her hand on the arm of a man Adrian had never seen.
The timestamp in the corner read March 14th.
He set all three items on the counter.
"Who is D.
Reyes?" he said.
Vanessa's composure held for exactly two more seconds.
Then it didn't.
"It isn't what it looks like," she said.
"What does it look like?"
"Adrian—"
"What does it look like, Vanessa?"
She pressed her lips together.
When she spoke again, her voice had gone quiet and careful in a way that told him she was calculating, not confessing.
"I have been managing some personal finances separately.
That is not illegal.
The letter is a private matter.
The photograph—"
"Is from the night of March 14th," he said.
"While I was in Singapore.
While my children were in this house with you."
She said nothing.
"Where were they that night?"
Still nothing.
"Vanessa.
Where were Lily and Noah on the night of March 14th?"
Her jaw moved.
"They were here.
Rosa was here."
"Rosa's schedule shows she was off that Thursday.
I checked it an hour ago."
The silence that followed was the loudest thing in the room.
"Who was watching my children," Adrian said, "while you were at dinner with D.
Reyes?"
Vanessa picked up her coat.
"I want my attorney present before I answer any more questions."
She walked to the door.
"The envelope stays," Adrian said.
Her hand was on the door handle.
She didn't turn around.
She left without the envelope.
Adrian stood at the counter for a long time.
Then he picked up his phone and called Claire Ashworth's emergency line.
She answered on the third ring.
"I need an emergency protective order," he said.
May you like
"And I need someone to find out everything there is to know about a man named D.
Reyes."
