Chapter 2: What He Signed in Monaco

Grant's laugh died the moment the first security guard put a hand on his shoulder.

"What are you doing?

Get off me." He looked back at the captain.

"Tell them who I am."

The captain didn't move.

"Sir," the guard said quietly, "we've been asked to escort you and your guest off the vessel."

The younger woman grabbed Grant's arm.

"Grant, what's happening?"

He pulled free of her and stepped toward Evelyn.

"You think this is funny?

I built everything we have.

Everything."

Evelyn looked at him the way you look at someone you've already finished grieving.

"You built nothing, Grant.

You spent it."

A crew member appeared at the top of the steps holding a leather document folder.

He walked it directly to Evelyn and said nothing.

Grant's face changed when he saw it.

"Where did you get that?"

Evelyn didn't answer.

She opened the folder, glanced at the top page, and handed it to the man standing quietly behind her — a man Grant hadn't noticed until that moment.

"Who is that?" Grant demanded.

"My attorney," Evelyn said.

"He's been on board since Monaco."

The younger woman whispered something and started backing away.

Grant stood on the dock in the afternoon sun and finally understood that this had never been a confrontation.

It had been a closing.
