Chapter 5: The Part He Was Hiding

Grant had a story ready.

He had been building it for months.

Evelyn learned this not from Daniel, but from a woman named Claire Ashworth, who called the yacht that evening from a London number and asked to speak with her directly.

Evelyn almost didn't take the call.

She didn't recognize the name.

"I know you don't know me," Claire said.

"I worked at Hargreaves and Finch until six weeks ago.

I was Grant's point of contact there for the last two years."

Evelyn sat down.

"Why are you calling me?"

"Because he told them you were mentally unstable.

That you'd been making irrational financial decisions.

He was building a case to have you assessed — to challenge your legal capacity to manage the trust."

The salon felt very still.

"He was going to argue I wasn't competent."

"He already started.

There are two psychiatric assessments commissioned in your name — you never attended them, obviously, because you were never told about them.

The reports were written anyway." A pause.

"I'm sorry.

I should have called sooner.

I didn't know how far it had gone until I left the firm."

"Why did you leave?"

A beat of silence.

"Because when I realized what the reports said, I asked my supervising partner whether you had consented to the process.

He told me that wasn't my concern." Another pause.

"I've kept copies of everything.

The commission letters.

The reports.

The internal correspondence."

Evelyn's hand was flat on the table.

She looked at it.

"Claire," she said.

"Are you willing to provide those documents formally?"

"Yes.

That's why I called."

After she hung up, Evelyn sat without moving for a long moment.

Then she called Daniel.

He picked up on the second ring.

"He commissioned false psychiatric reports," she said.

"To challenge my legal capacity."

A silence on Daniel's end that said he was not entirely surprised.

"How long?" he said.

"At least two years."

"Do you have a source?"

"A former associate at Hargreaves.

She has the documents."

"Name?"

"Claire Ashworth."

She heard him writing.

"This changes the shape of everything," he said.

"This isn't just a financial dispute anymore.

If those reports were fabricated and submitted anywhere in a legal context —"

"What does it mean for him?"

Daniel's answer was careful and exact.

"It means Grant wasn't just trying to take your money," he said.

"He was trying to take your voice."
