Chapter 2: The Warning on the Photograph

“They’re yours,” her father said.
“The car in the driveway—and the key to the deposit box your mother left for you.”
Maya’s fingers trembled as the keys dropped into her palm.
“My mother left me something?”
Chloe’s smirk vanished.
“That car was supposed to be mine!”
“No,” he replied.
“Your mother told you it was yours.
I never did.”
Her stepmother stepped forward, suddenly pale.
“We should discuss this privately.”
“We’re discussing it now.”
He opened his travel bag and removed a sealed envelope.
Maya saw her name printed across the front.
“The bank called me this morning,” he continued.
“Someone tried to access Maya’s graduation trust using my signature.”
Maya slowly turned toward her stepmother.
“What trust?”
“It’s a misunderstanding,” the woman said quickly.
“You’ve been traveling.
I handled a few family expenses.”
“By signing my name?”
Chloe grabbed her mother’s arm.
“Don’t say anything else.”
Everyone went silent.
Her father placed the envelope in Maya’s hands.
“The dress wasn’t the only thing they wanted gone before I came home.”
Maya looked down and noticed a scorched photograph sticking out from beneath the papers.
In it, her mother stood beside the very car now parked outside—and someone had written a warning across the back.
Her stepmother lunged for it.
“Maya, don’t read that!”
But Maya had already turned the photograph over.
