Chapter 7: The Evidence They Tried to Take

Malcolm’s car stopped inches from the lowered barrier.
A security guard stood behind it with one hand raised.
“Turn off the engine,” the guard ordered.
Malcolm backed up.
Claire stepped into the lane and held up the signed property receipt.
“You removed evidence belonging to a customer,” she said.
“Hand it over.”
“It belongs to the bank.”
“Then why are you leaving with it?”
Vanessa’s attorney pulled her aside.
“Say nothing else.”
Vanessa shook him off.
“Malcolm, do not give her that card.”
The guard opened the passenger door and took the briefcase.
Malcolm climbed out, his collar dark with sweat.
“You set me up,” he told Vanessa.
“You processed the transfer.”
“Because you said Daniel approved it!”
Claire opened the briefcase on the hood of the security vehicle.
The sealed pouch lay beneath two passports and a stack of withdrawal slips.
Daniel pointed to the passports.
“Why does he have one in Vanessa Cole’s name?”
Vanessa reached for them.
The guard closed the case.
“My client is leaving,” her attorney said.
“No, she isn’t,” Chloe replied.
Vanessa faced her daughter.
“You foolish, ungrateful girl.”
“You taught me to record people when I needed protection.”
“I taught you to survive.”
“You taught me to hurt Maya so I wouldn’t notice what you were doing to me.”
Maya took Chloe’s hand.
Chloe’s fingers shook, but she did not pull away.
Two officers entered the garage with the bank’s security manager.
Claire handed one of them the property receipt and Chloe’s phone.
“This recording identifies three participants,” Claire said.
“The transfer is still pending at our clearing institution.”
Malcolm pointed at Vanessa.
“She forged everything.
I only bypassed the camera and approved the exception.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Listen to him beg.”
Mr.
Ellis appeared at the garage entrance.
He carried a thick envelope against his chest.
“I have the notary log,” he said.
Vanessa went rigid.
“Go home, Ellis.”
“No.”
“You accepted my money.”
“I returned it this morning.”
“You verified Daniel’s signature.”
“I stamped a document you brought me after threatening to expose my son’s debts.”
One officer opened the envelope.
“Is this the original log?”
“Yes.
The serial number Vanessa used belongs to a stamp reported missing six months ago.”
Vanessa turned to Daniel.
“If I fall, you fall with me.
Your signature began this.”
Daniel moved beside Maya.
“Then I’ll answer for signing carelessly.”
“You’ll lose your company.”
“If that is the price of telling the truth, I’ll pay it.”
“You’ll destroy Chloe’s future.”
Chloe stepped closer.
“Stop using me as a shield.”
Vanessa’s hand rose, but Maya caught her wrist before it reached Chloe’s face.
“No more,” Maya said.
The garage fell silent.
Vanessa pulled free.
“You think Elena was some saint?
She planned to expose me and take Daniel away from all of us.”
“She was his wife,” Maya replied.
“And I was the one keeping their business alive while she played generous benefactor.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“You moved charity funds into Rosebridge.”
“I borrowed them.”
“You stole from families who trusted Elena.”
“I earned every dollar.”
Chloe’s voice dropped.
“Did you marry Daniel because you loved him?”
Vanessa looked at her daughter.
“Love does not pay bills.”
Chloe flinched as if the words had struck her.
Maya put an arm around her shoulders.
“You heard her.
You don’t have to earn her love anymore.”
The officer turned to Vanessa.
“Mrs.
Bennett, you are being detained while we investigate forgery, attempted theft, evidence tampering, and conspiracy.”
Vanessa’s attorney stepped back.
“I advised her not to speak.”
Vanessa looked at Chloe one final time.
“When they turn on you, don’t come crawling back to me.”
Chloe’s chin trembled.
“I won’t.
That’s the first promise I’ve made today that I intend to keep.”
The officers led Vanessa toward the exit.
Malcolm followed with the second officer, protesting that he had only followed procedure.
Claire inserted the recovered memory card into an offline laptop.
Four folders appeared on the screen: ROSEBRIDGE, TRUST, RECORDINGS, and MAYA.
Maya touched the final folder.
“What did Mom leave for me?”
Daniel stood beside her.
“Whatever it is, you should open it.”
Maya clicked.
Her mother appeared on the screen in the pink gown years before it had been altered for Maya.
May you like
Elena looked directly into the camera.
“Maya, if you are watching this, then someone found the evidence before you found the truth about your father.”
