Chapter 2: Daniel’s Widow

The young server turned the tablet toward the manager.
A message filled the screen.
“Make sure the waitress serves table nine.
Slip the bracelet into her apron after dessert.
I’ll accuse her in front of everyone.”
The waitress gripped the edge of her tray.
“What bracelet?”
The guest’s smile vanished.
“That message is fake.
Take that tablet away.”
She reached for it, but the manager stepped back.
“It came from your number six minutes ago,” the server said.
“And there’s an attachment.”
The manager opened it.
A photograph appeared of the waitress leaving her own home that morning.
Beneath it were four words:
“Daniel’s widow.
Do it tonight.”
The waitress touched the wedding ring hanging from a chain around her neck.
“How do you know Daniel?”
The guest glanced toward the ballroom doors.
Security was already blocking them.
“You should have returned what he left you,” she said coldly.
“He was my husband.”
“And he was hiding something from you.”
The manager enlarged the document attached beneath the photograph.
His face changed as he read the first line.
Then he looked at the waitress.
“This isn’t about a bracelet,” he said.
“It’s about who really owns this hotel.”
