Chapter 7: The Boardroom Trap

Martin turned off the kitchen light.
“Stay away from the windows.”
A man’s voice called from outside.
“Ms.
Ward?
Adrian Mercer asked me to collect company property.”
Celia gripped the recorder.
Nora opened the door but kept the chain fastened.
“This is a private home.”
The man held up an envelope.
“Court order.
All Ashford documents must be surrendered.”
Grace took the paper through the gap.
“This is not signed by a judge.”
The man’s hand pushed against the door.
Martin planted his shoulder behind it.
“Leave.”
“You’re interfering with a legal investigation.”
Grace lifted her phone.
“Then wait while I call the court clerk.”
The man stepped back.
His car was gone before the clerk answered.
The next morning, Nora entered the Ashford boardroom wearing her clean waitress uniform.
Vivian sat at the head of the table.
“You are barred from this property,” Vivian said.
Nora placed the brass key beside the water pitcher.
“My name is on the trust.
I have a right to hear what you say about it.”
Adrian Mercer stood beside Vivian.
“The alleged trust is invalid.
Its original cannot be located, and Mrs.
Mercer has been connected to its disappearance.”
Eli raised the tablet.
“She was in the ballroom when the safe opened.”
Adrian tapped the table.
“That footage was extracted by a suspended manager and an employee facing dismissal.”
Martin laid down his hospital record.
“I was under anesthesia when the transfer bearing my signature was approved.”
Vivian did not look at it.
“You shared your electronic credentials.”
“No.
You copied them.”
“Prove it.”
Grace placed Celia’s ledger before the board.
Vivian laughed.
“A handwritten notebook from an admitted thief?”
Celia stepped through the door.
“No.
From your assistant of nine years.”
Vivian’s fingers tightened around her pen.
“You stole confidential records.”
“You ordered me to frame Nora.”
“I told you to recover company property.”
“You said, ‘Put the bracelet in her apron and let security ruin her.’”
Adrian rose.
“This meeting is adjourned.”
Board member Samuel Price remained seated.
“Sit down, Adrian.”
Grace played the kitchen recording.
“Destroy the original certificate before the board meets,” Vivian’s voice said.
The room stayed silent until Adrian reached for the recorder.
Eli pulled it away.
Vivian stood.
“Celia edited that.”
“I also kept your emails,” Celia said.
Adrian whispered something to Vivian.
She turned to the board.
“Before you accept the word of frightened employees, you should know Nora Mercer received funds from Daniel’s private account three days after he passed.”
Nora stared at her.
“What funds?”
Adrian displayed a bank statement.
“Four hundred thousand dollars transferred to an account in your name.”
“I have never seen that account.”
“Yet it paid your mortgage last month.”
Sophie, seated behind Nora, spoke up.
“Mom, our mortgage was paid.”
Nora turned.
“What?”
“I thought you did it.”
Vivian looked around the table.
“Daniel moved pension money through his wife.
Nora benefited.
Martin authorized it.
Celia carried records.
They are not witnesses.
They are partners.”
Two uniformed investigators entered the room.
Adrian pointed at Nora.
“That is the woman named in our complaint.”
One investigator approached her.
“Mrs.
Mercer, we need you to come with us.”
Sophie caught Nora’s arm.
“Don’t let them take you.”
Nora looked directly at Vivian.
“You built this before Daniel was gone.”
Vivian’s lips curved.
“At last, you understand.”
Eli studied the bank statement on-screen.
“Wait,” he said.
“That account wasn’t opened by Nora.”
Adrian shut the laptop.
Eli pointed at the signature line before the screen went dark.
“It was opened by someone using Nora’s maiden name.”
The lead investigator turned back.
“What was your maiden name, Mrs.
Mercer?”
“Ward,” Nora said.
May you like
Across the table, Celia’s face turned white.
“That account belongs to my sister.”
