Chapter 1: The Mark on the Baby

“Hold on.

Whose baby is that?” Maya asked, her voice instantly cutting through the silent living room as her daughter stepped through the front door cradling an infant.

“We’re just watching him tonight,” her daughter replied quickly, shifting the child uneasily in her arms.

Charles stepped forward from the nearby room, his brow furrowed with clear concern.

“Watching him for who?”

“Dad, it’s complicated...”

“Complicated?” Maya raised her hands in utter disbelief, her voice echoing off the walls.

“Y’all walked in here with somebody’s baby!” 😤

Their son walked in right behind them, taking the calm baby into his own arms to soothe him.

“Okay, look—he’s my sister’s.”

“Jama?” Maya gasped, her hand falling to her side.

“The girl that stayed here the other night?”

“Yeah,” he nodded somberly.

Charles took a step closer, his face tightening with confusion.

“Since when does Jama have a baby?

Nobody knew anything about this.”

“Nobody knew,” his son said, looking down at the child.

“She left him with us and just disappeared.

We didn’t know what else to do, Dad.

We can’t even find her.”

Charles froze.

A chilling realization washed over his features as his eyes locked onto the baby’s blanket.

“Hold on...” 😨

“What?” Maya asked, sensing the sudden change in the room’s energy.

Without a word, Charles reached down and lifted the side of his fitted shirt, exposing his lower right waist.

Stamped clearly against his skin was a dark, crescent-shaped birthmark.

He stayed silent as his son carefully turned the baby around and pulled up the back of his tiny shirt.

Positioned in the exact same spot on the infant’s back was an identical, perfectly shaped crescent birthmark.

💔

Maya stared at the matching marks, horror spreading across her expression as she covered her mouth with both hands.

“Charles...

No.”

Charles stared straight ahead, his eyes wide with total shock and undeniable guilt as the silent truth filled the room.
