Chapter 7: The Truth in the Hearing Room

Two weeks later, Maya sat beside Jama in a small hearing room at the county courthouse.

Charles took the chair on Maya’s other side but left space between them.

Denise entered with a new attorney and placed her handbag on the table.

The judge looked at her.

“Ms.

Denise, the court ordered you to return every document connected to the Mill Road property.”

“I returned what I had.”

Maya’s lawyer stood.

“Not everything, Your Honor.”

Denise leaned toward Maya.

“You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?”

“No,” Maya said.

“I’m ending it.”

The first recording played.

Denise’s laughter filled the room as she described switching the signature page.

Ruth then confirmed what she had done.

Denise’s attorney rose.

“The video may have been altered.”

Ruth faced him.

“The security company verified the original timestamp.”

The investigator placed a sealed evidence bag on the table.

Inside was the blue folder Denise had tried to remove from the lawyer’s office.

“We also found this in Ms.

Denise’s vehicle,” she said.

Denise stood.

“They had no right to search my car.”

“Sit down,” the judge ordered.

Maya’s lawyer held up a second sheet.

“The folder contained six blank forms bearing copies of Charles’s signature.

It also contained a draft loan application using Maya’s name.”

Maya turned toward Denise.

“You were planning to use my identity too?”

“You received everything from Mother,” Denise replied.

“The attention, the praise, the better marriage.

I was taking my share.”

“You had half the cottage.”

“I wanted the half she gave you.”

“You already took my sister, my husband’s honesty, and twenty-two years of peace.”

Charles flinched, but Maya did not look away from Denise.

Denise pointed at Jama.

“She came to me.

She said she would help sell the cottage.”

Jama’s face tightened.

“That isn’t true.”

“I have messages.”

“So do I.”

Jama connected her phone to the room’s speaker.

Denise’s voice came through clearly.

“Bring the baby to Maya’s house,” the recording said.

“Once Maya sees the birthmark, she’ll throw Charles out.

Then he’ll sign anything to keep the rest quiet.”

The room fell still.

Denise’s attorney removed his glasses.

“You told me no such recording existed.”

“I was angry,” Denise said.

“I didn’t mean it.”

Jama stood.

“You told me to use my son as bait.”

“I gave you a family!”

“You gave me a secret and called it love.”

Denise reached into her handbag.

The investigator stepped forward, but Denise only removed an envelope.

“Jama, I’ll give you the cottage,” she said.

“Tell them Maya pressured you into making that recording.”

Maya rose slowly.

“You’re trying to buy your daughter in front of a judge.”

Denise pushed the envelope toward Jama.

“Take it.

Think about your child.”

Jama tore it in half.

“I am thinking about him,” she said.

“That’s why he will never grow up believing love comes with a price.”

The judge removed his glasses.

“The transfer deed is void,” he said.

“The sale remains blocked.

The cottage returns to its previous joint ownership until Denise’s half can be addressed through the pending financial claims.”

Denise gripped the table.

The investigator stepped beside her.

“You also need to come with me regarding the altered deed, the false loan application, and witness intimidation.”

Denise looked at Charles.

“Say something.

You owe me that much.”

Charles met her stare.

“I owed Jama the truth.

I owed Maya loyalty.

I never owed you permission to destroy them.”

The investigator guided Denise toward the door.

Denise twisted back toward Maya.

“You haven’t won.

You still have to go home with the man who lied to you.”

Maya held her gaze.

May you like

“No,” she said.

“Charles is going somewhere else tonight.”
