Chapter 1: The Woman Who Walked Three Blocks in the Rain

I believed my mother had skipped my wedding.
Then she showed up looking broken—and my bride begged me not to listen to her.
The ballroom doors swung open.
Mom stood there in tears.
Her formal dress was stained.
Her sleeve was ripped.
Her carefully styled hair was drenched and tangled.
"Michael."
I stepped toward her.
My new wife quickly grabbed me.
"Don't."
Then someone behind us murmured:
"Wasn't his mother invited?"
I froze.
Of course Mom had been invited.
At least, that was what I thought.
I turned to Nia.
"What do they mean?"
She wouldn't answer.
Then I remembered every excuse I had been given about Mom before the wedding.
Why she hadn't responded.
Why nobody seemed worried she was missing.
Why Nia had insisted everything was fine.
Now my mother had finally made it to the ballroom.
And the woman I had just married looked terrified.
Mom took one more step toward me.
Nia squeezed my arm.
"Michael, please."
And I realized she wasn't afraid of my mother.
She was afraid of the truth my mother had come to tell me.
---
What did Nia do to keep Michael's mother away from that wedding?
