Chapter 2: What Was Written at the Bottom

Part 2 ⬇️

I pulled my arm free.

Nia's grip tightened for one second — then let go.

Mom crossed the floor.

Her shoes were soaked.

She had clearly been out in the rain for a long time.

"How did you get here?" I whispered.

"I walked," she said.

"Three blocks.

They took my phone, Michael."

"Who took your phone?"

She looked past me at Nia.

Nia said nothing.

"I was never sent an invitation," Mom said.

Her voice was steady now, even through the tears.

"I called you twelve times last week.

Did you know that?"

I hadn't known that.

I turned to Nia.

"She called me twelve times?"

"She's confused," Nia said quietly.

"She does this."

"I am not confused." Mom reached into the torn pocket of her dress and pulled out a folded piece of paper.

Her hands were shaking.

"I found this in my mailbox the morning of your engagement party.

Read it, Michael.

Read what it says."

Nia stepped forward fast.

"Don't."

But I already had it in my hands.

And when I saw whose name was signed at the bottom — I felt the room go cold around me.

---

What was written in that letter — and whose name did Michael see?

The full truth is more painful than anyone in that ballroom expected.
