Chapter 2: The Signature That Couldn't Exist

Dad's hands were shaking as he scrolled through the documents on his phone.

"Monica," he said quietly.

"Whose signature is this?"

She didn't answer.

She just stood there, arms crossed, eyes darting toward the front door like she was calculating an exit.

The signature on the car sale paperwork wasn't mine.

It wasn't Dad's either.

It was a copy of my late mother's signature.

My mother had been gone for six years.

"That's not possible," I whispered.

Kayla stepped forward.

"It's just a formality.

Mom handles all the family paperwork.

That's nothing."

"That's forgery," Dad said.

His voice was low and steady in a way that scared me more than shouting would have.

Monica finally spoke.

"You're overreacting.

The account, the signature — I can explain all of it."

"Then explain it," Dad said.

"Right now."

She opened her mouth.

Closed it.

Opened it again.

That's when Dad's phone rang.

It was the same unknown number that had sent the warning.

He put it on speaker without thinking.

A man's voice came through, calm and deliberate.

"Mr.

Harlan, before she has a chance to disappear anything else — check the secondary account.

Not the one she showed you.

The other one."

Monica's face went white.

---

What was in that second account — and how long had Monica been hiding it?

The full truth is more shocking than anyone expected.
