Chapter 2: The Photograph Melissa Feared

The figure stepped into the light.

It was an elderly woman, thin and trembling, with dust covering her clothes.

“Who are you?” I demanded, pulling both girls behind me.

She ignored me and held out the photograph.

“Ask your wife why she sealed us inside.”

My wife grabbed my arm.

“Ryan, don’t listen to her.

Call the police.”

The woman laughed bitterly.

“And tell them what, Melissa?

That the child you erased has finally been found?”

“Stop!” Melissa screamed.

I stared at the photograph.

It showed Melissa standing outside our house five years earlier, holding a newborn baby.

Beside her was the same elderly woman—but someone had written my name across the back.

“This was taken before we bought this house,” I whispered.

“How is that possible?”

The little girl clung to my shirt.

“Mommy said you would come for me.”

Melissa’s face went white.

“Who is her mother?” I asked.

Before anyone answered, my four-year-old daughter pointed into the darkness behind the wall.

“There’s another room, Daddy,” she whispered.

“And someone in there has been calling your name.”
