Chapter 7: The Evidence That Spoke

Melissa reached for the phone, but Ortiz placed it in an evidence bag.

“That recording was private,” Melissa said.

“Your daughter made it,” Ortiz replied.

“And it mentions the destruction of evidence.”

Melissa pointed at Sophie.

“She did not understand what she was doing.”

Sophie hid behind me.

“I understood you were lying.”

The next hearing began that afternoon.

Melissa’s attorney withdrew before the judge entered.

“You cannot leave me now,” Melissa told him.

He set his briefcase on the table.

“You asked me to burn records.

I will not lose my career for you.”

Melissa turned to Dr.

Vale, who had been brought in with his own attorney.

“Tell them Ryan signed everything.”

Vale looked toward the judge.

“Mr.

Hayes signed a storage agreement.

Melissa added the authorization page later.”

“You altered it,” Melissa said.

“At your request.”

“You were paid.”

“So were you,” he replied.

“You used your aunt’s house to hide Claire, and you paid me to create false records after Sophie was born.”

Melissa’s hand closed around a glass of water.

She did not drink it.

“You are blaming me to save yourself.”

Vale opened a sealed envelope.

“The clinic server made automatic backups.

I kept one after Melissa ordered the system erased.”

The judge examined the records while the courtroom remained silent.

My attorney stood.

“Do these files establish Hope’s identity?”

“Yes,” Vale answered.

“Hope Bennett is Ryan Hayes’s biological daughter.

Claire Bennett is her mother.”

“And Sophie?”

“Sophie Hayes is the biological daughter of Ryan and Melissa Hayes.

The conception occurred without Ryan’s informed permission.”

Melissa stood.

“I gave Sophie a loving home.”

“You used her to trap Ryan,” Claire said from the witness stand.

“I raised his child while you hid.”

“You were the reason I had to hide.”

Melissa leaned toward Claire.

“You came to me.

You begged me to make you disappear.”

“For three days,” Claire replied.

“Then you took my daughter after she was born and told Ryan I had abandoned him.”

Ruth placed the old photograph on the evidence screen.

“I took this picture the morning Hope was born.”

The image enlarged behind the judge.

Melissa was holding Hope outside the house, but a mirror in the window showed Claire reaching from behind a locked door.

Melissa stared at the reflection.

“That proves nothing.”

Walter rose from the witness bench.

“Then perhaps the property records will.”

Melissa turned sharply.

Walter held up a file.

“The holding company that sold Ryan the house belonged to you.

You moved him there because the county planned to inspect the old property.

You thought keeping Claire close would make her easier to control.”

“You were always watching my home,” Melissa said.

“I was watching children cry at a sealed vent.”

The judge removed his glasses.

“Temporary custody of Sophie is transferred to her father immediately.

Melissa Hayes is prohibited from contacting Claire, Ruth, Hope, or Sophie except through counsel.”

Two officers approached Melissa.

She backed away.

“Ryan, make a deal with me.

Say Claire entered willingly, and I will tell the court you are a good father.”

“You no longer decide what kind of father I am.”

“I can still tell Sophie you chose another family over her.”

I stepped beside my daughter.

“Sophie heard you lie with her own ears.”

Ortiz held out her hand.

“Melissa, you are being taken into custody for unlawful confinement, child endangerment, identity fraud, and evidence tampering.”

Melissa looked at Sophie.

“Come to Mommy.”

Sophie pressed her face against my coat.

Claire took Hope’s hand and approached us.

For the first time, the two girls stood together without a wall between them.

As the officers led Melissa toward the door, she twisted around.

“You will never make them one family,” she called.

“Every time Sophie sees Hope, she will remember that you chose Hope’s mother.”

The courtroom door closed behind her.

Hope looked up at me, then at Sophie.

“Do you still want both of us?” she asked.
