Chapter 1: The Woman I Refused to See
I humiliated an uninvited Black woman at my all-white wedding and chased her out.
Then my husband rushed over sobbing and revealed she was his boss who paid for the entire venue.
Our all-white wedding was supposed to be the happiest day of my life.
Then a middle-aged Black woman stepped into the reception.
She was wearing plain clothes and glancing around quietly.
I felt furious that someone spoiled my perfect aesthetic.
I marched directly over to her in front of every guest.
“You do not belong here,” I yelled, raising my voice.
I took hold of her arm and made her leave through the front doors.
Everyone was watching and whispering in utter shock.
Suddenly, my husband ran by me, looking absolutely horrified.
He reached the woman and dropped to his knees.
“Do you know who you just insulted?” he shouted at me.
My heart stopped.
“She is my boss,” he said, his voice shaking.
“Without her, I would not even have a job.”
The entire room went completely silent.
Then he looked at me with tears in his eyes and revealed the ultimate truth.
“She paid for this entire wedding because she believed in me.”
