Chapter 2: The Voice on the Phone

My face burned as every guest stared at me.

“I—I didn’t know,” I whispered.

My husband stood and stepped between us.

“You didn’t ask.

You saw her clothes and the color of her skin, and you decided she wasn’t worthy of being here.”

The woman gently pulled her arm away from me.

Red marks were already forming where I had gripped her.

“I’m sorry,” I said.

“Please come back inside.”

She looked at me sadly.

“Would you be apologizing if you still thought I was poor?”

I had no answer.

Then my mother hurried through the doors.

“There’s been a misunderstanding.

Let’s not ruin the reception.”

My husband turned on her.

“You knew who she was, didn’t you?”

Mother’s smile disappeared.

The woman opened her handbag and removed a sealed envelope bearing my mother’s name.

“She called me three weeks ago,” she said.

“She asked me to pay for the wedding—but she made me promise never to tell her daughter.”

“That’s not true!” Mother cried.

The woman held out her phone.

“Then perhaps everyone should hear the message you left me.”

Mother lunged toward the phone, but my husband pressed play.

Her recorded voice filled the silent entrance.

“I need your money,” Mother said, “but my daughter can never learn why…”
