Chapter 2: The Smile That Came Back Too Fast

Part 2 ⬇️
Genevieve recovered fast.
That was the first thing I noticed.
The terror on her face lasted maybe three seconds.
Then the smile came back.
'Dorian.
Sweetheart.' Her voice shifted to silk.
'You misunderstood what you heard.'
'I heard everything,' I said.
She stepped toward me, reaching for my arm.
'I was frustrated.
You know how the mornings are with the babies crying.
I didn't mean any of it.'
The caregiver was still holding my sons.
Everett's face was buried in her shoulder.
My other boy, Felix, was staring at me with wide, wet eyes.
I looked at the broken cup on the floor.
The milk still dripping from the caregiver's hair.
'Put the ring on the counter,' I said.
Genevieve's smile didn't move.
'You're being dramatic.'
'The ring, Genevieve.'
She laughed softly, like I'd made a small joke.
Then she picked up her coffee — a fresh cup — and sat back down at the table.
'Dorian, before you do anything foolish, you should know I've already spoken to a lawyer.'
The caregiver looked up at me.
Something in her expression changed.
Not surprise.
Something closer to relief.
And something else I couldn't read yet.
Then her eyes dropped to the floor near Genevieve's chair.
A folder.
Partially open.
My name printed across the top.
---
What was inside that folder — and how long had Genevieve been planning this?
