Chapter 2: She Left It to Me to Give

My mother stopped when she saw me.

She didn't drop the veil.

She held it tighter.

"Juliet," she said.

"Let me explain."

"Which part?" I asked.

"The dress?

The date?

The venue?

Or the fact that your signature is at the bottom of that order?"

She looked at Sienna.

Sienna looked at Graham.

Graham looked at the floor.

"You were never right for him," my mother said quietly.

"I tried to tell you.

You were so focused on that gown, on the flowers, on every little detail — you never once stopped to ask if Graham was happy."

"So you asked for him."

"Someone had to."

I looked at Graham.

"Did you come to her?

Or did she come to you?"

He didn't answer immediately.

That pause told me everything.

"Jules," he finally said.

"It just happened."

"How long?"

Sienna touched his arm.

"Does it matter now?"

I turned back to my mother.

She was still holding my veil.

Both hands.

Like it already belonged to someone else.

"When were you going to tell me?" I asked.

She lifted her chin.

"After June seventh."

The room went completely silent.

Margot, behind the counter, made a small sound.

Like she was trying not to breathe.

Then my mother said something so quietly I almost missed it.

"The deposit on Ashcombe was your grandmother's money, Juliet.

She left it to me.

To use for a wedding in this family."

I felt the floor tilt.

"She left it to me," I said.

My mother smiled, very slightly.

"She left it to me to give."
